Shanghai, China – The aviation market in Shanghai is experiencing a significant复苏, or revival, with a notable increase in flight operations and passenger traffic. According to a report from the Shanghai Airport Group on September 2, during the 62-day summer vacation period from July 1 to August 31, 2024, Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports handled a total of 143,000 flights, marking the highest record during the summer vacation season.

Record-Breaking Numbers

During this period, Pudong Airport alone handled 96,000 flights, while Hongqiao Airport handled 47,000 flights. The airports also served 22.93 million inbound and outbound passengers, with Pudong Airport catering to 14.48 million and Hongqiao Airport to 8.45 million passengers. These figures are the highest ever recorded during the summer vacation period.

International and Domestic Hotspots

International hotspots included destinations such as Japan, Thailand, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. Domestically, the most popular destinations were Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Sanya, and Urumqi.

Enhanced Services and Infrastructure

In response to the overlapping characteristics of international tourists, student travel, and family visits during the summer vacation, Shanghai airports continued to enhance their hardware facilities and service products. This included optimizing the special passenger green channel and the unaccompanied minor service. Additionally, a one-stop comprehensive service center for foreign nationals was established, and the China样·China Young summer vacation cultural and tourism series of activities were launched.

Expansion of International Routes

Since the beginning of this year, the Shanghai aviation transport market has entered an accelerated recovery phase. In the first half of the year, five new international passenger flight destinations were added, including Athens, Greece; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and Manama, Bahrain. Additionally, five international passenger flight destinations were resumed, including St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk in Russia, Brussels in Belgium, and Takamatsu in Japan.

During the summer vacation period, two new international passenger flight destinations were added—Marseille, France, and Manchester, UK. Two international passenger flight destinations were resumed—Barcelona, Spain, and Kagoshima, Japan. Flights to the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, and South Korea were also increased. On September 26, the first direct international flight to Venice will be launched in China.

Growing International Traffic

With the addition and resumption of international flight routes and the continuous improvement of出入境 facilitation services, the number of international flights and passengers has also increased significantly during the summer vacation. A total of 41,000 international flights were handled, serving 6.66 million international passengers. On August 11, the daily international passenger traffic reached 118,000, the highest since the beginning of this year.
