News Content:
On August 18, Lhasa City, Tibet Autonomous Region, welcomed an important scientific expedition – the launch of the second Qinghai-Tibet scientific expedition focusing on the “one plateau, two lakes, and three rivers” landmark scientific exploration activity. This expedition aims to conduct in-depth research into the core region of Asia’s water tower, namely the Purang glacier plateau, the lakes of Shigatse and Naqu, and the sources of the Yangtze, Nujiang, and Yarlung Zangbo rivers.
Asia’s water tower, as a significant source of global freshwater resources, plays a crucial role in the stability of its ecosystem and the impact of climate change on global water security. The region not only boasts the world’s largest mid-latitude Purang glacier plateau but also contains numerous high-altitude lakes and river sources, all of which directly affect the survival and well-being of billions of people around the globe.
This expedition is led by a team of internationally renowned academicians, including Yao Tandong, a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician, and Lonnie G. Thompson, an American Academy of Sciences academician, among others. They will lead more than 400 scientific expedition members in a comprehensive study of the region’s climate environment, ecosystems, natural resources, geological evolution, and other aspects through interdisciplinary and multi-method research. The scope of the research includes changes in the frozen sphere, the carbon cycle of ecosystems, high-altitude environment and health, prospects for natural resources and energy, geological and environmental evolution, and pathways to green and sustainable development.
The scientific expedition is expected to continue for some time, and its findings will provide scientific evidence and decision-support for regional ecological environment protection, the formulation of sustainable development strategies, and responses to climate change, with profound significance for the protection of Asia’s water tower and the maintenance of global water security and ecological balance.
