Heavy rainfall has hit numerous regions in Guangdong Province, causing severe damage to more than 320 townships and streets, according to meteorological reports.
Recent days have seen strong rainfall battering parts of Guangdong, with scattered downpours ranging from moderate to heavy in most counties and cities across the province, according to data from the provincial meteorological and hydrological monitoring stations. The heavy rains, which began on the afternoon of August 17 and continued until the morning of August 18, led to significant flooding in local areas. Some townships and streets have seen rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters.
A report from Xinhua News Agency in Guangzhou stated that during the heavy downpour, more than 320 townships and streets were hit by either thunderstorms or severe thunderstorms.
Accompanying the heavy rainfall were short bursts of intense precipitation and localized winds of 6 to 8 degrees, significantly impacting local residents’ livelihoods and production. The townships and streets of Shi’ao in Fogang County, Longfu in Sihui City, and Gaoqiao in Lianjiang City in Zhanjiang, in particular, were severely affected, with maximum hourly rainfall reaching 80.5 millimeters.
The Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Bureau forecasts that from August 19 to 21, the province will experience another period of heavy rainfall, with localized areas facing the risk of typhoons, severe thunderstorms, or even extraordinary floods. During this period, some counties and cities may also be hit by severe convective weather, including strong thunderstorms, intense rainfall, and winds of 8 to 11 degrees.
In response to these forecasts, the meteorological department has urged the public to be vigilant against the potential hazards of heavy rainfall, such as urban flooding, mountain floods, landslides, debris flows, and flooding in small rivers. Additionally, thunderstorms and strong winds are frequent over the land and coastal areas of Guangdong as well as the northern part of the South China Sea, necessitating precautions against their impacts on outdoor activities, high-altitude operations, land and maritime transport, maritime operations, coastal and island tourism.
In the face of the heavy rainfall, local governments at all levels and the general public have quickly mobilized to initiate emergency response plans, mobilize rescue forces, and ensure the safety of the people’s lives and property. At the same time, the meteorological department is closely monitoring the weather changes and issuing timely warnings to remind the public to take preventive measures.
