Title: Pharmaceutical Anti-Corruption Efforts Deepen, with Multiple Individuals Sanctioned

Article:
In recent times, the anti-corruption efforts within China’s pharmaceutical and health sector have been intensifying, with multiple officials being disciplined for violations of discipline and law. According to China News Service, the original party secretary and director of the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission, Duan Yuxi, was expelled from the party and dismissed from his position, and his suspected criminal issues were transferred to the procuratorial organs for legal review and prosecution, along with the related assets.

Duan Yuxi’s investigation is another example of the anti-corruption action within the pharmaceutical and health sector. This year, there have been frequent new developments in pharmaceutical sector anti-corruption, with over 220 key individuals within the pharmaceutical and health sector being investigated as of August 2, covering top leaders in local health commissions, medical insurance, drug regulatory bodies, as well as management teams in hospitals and pharmaceutical companies.

The Guangdong Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection recently reported several cases of officials in the pharmaceutical and health sector who had violated discipline and law. The original party secretary and director, Zhu Hong, was expelled from the party and dismissed from his position, and his suspected criminal issues were transferred to the procuratorial organs for review and prosecution. Zhu Hong was accused of using his position to benefit others in medical equipment procurement, bill payments, and other areas, constituting serious violations of duty and suspected bribery crime.

Chen Yongsheng, the original party secretary and director of the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission, was investigated in October last year and expelled from the party in January this year. The report showed that he illegally accepted large amounts of property using his position.

In addition, the original party secretary and director of the Guangdong Provincial Food and Drug Administration, Jiang Xiaodong, and the original first-level inspector of the Guangdong Provincial Food and Drug Administration, Su Shengfeng, were also reported to have been disciplined on the same day.

The corruption issues in grassroots health institutions are also under scrutiny. Wang Lianqing, the original director of the Zhaiqiao Central Hospital of Longding County, Sichuan Province, was investigated for turning the hospital into a “corruption circle” and holding secret “bribe-taking meetings”. Wang Lianqing arranged for staff at the hospital to embezzle basic public health service funds of over 1.39 million yuan and organized all employees to meet and provide consistent statements, falsify account books and documents, attempting to cover up the facts.

The establishment of a long-term mechanism for pharmaceutical anti-corruption is accelerating. In addition to strengthening regulation and rectification, this year’s pharmaceutical anti-corruption work has also focused on the establishment of a long-term mechanism aimed at preventing corruption in the pharmaceutical and health sector from the source, ensuring the rational use of medical resources and the protection of patients’ rights.

This pharmaceutical anti-corruption action demonstrates the Chinese government’s determination to combat corruption within the pharmaceutical and health sector, aiming to build a more transparent and efficient medical system to enhance public trust and satisfaction with medical services.
