Beijing – Mingxin Qirui, a newly established chip company focused on developing next-generation intelligent processing-in-memory (PIM) chips, has announced the completion of a near RMB 100 million (approximately $14 million USD) angel round of financing. The round was led by Jinqiu Fund, with participation from prominent strategic and financial investors including Lenovo Capital and Xiaomi Strategic Investment.

Founded in May 2024, Mingxin Qirui aims to overcome the limitations of traditional computing architectures by developing novel Resistive Random-Access Memory (RRAM) storage and AI computing technologies. This investment underscores the growing interest and urgency in finding solutions to the memory wall bottleneck that is increasingly hindering the performance of AI applications, particularly those based on large language models.

The Von Neumann Bottleneck and the Rise of AI

For decades, the dominant computing paradigm has been the Von Neumann architecture, where data is stored in memory and then transferred to the central processing unit (CPU) for computation. However, the rise of AI, especially large models, has placed immense strain on this architecture. These models require massive amounts of matrix multiplication and addition, leading to a surge in both parameters and computational demands.

While processor speeds have increased dramatically, the speed of data transfer and storage has lagged behind. This discrepancy creates a bottleneck, often referred to as the memory wall, where the CPU spends more time waiting for data than actually processing it. This bottleneck significantly limits the overall performance of AI systems.

RRAM: A Promising Solution for Processing-in-Memory

Mingxin Qirui is betting on RRAM as a key technology for addressing this challenge. Unlike traditional memory solutions, RRAM offers the potential to integrate storage and computation into a single device, enabling processing-in-memory (PIM).

RRAM’s ability to integrate storage and computation is a crucial technological pathway for processing-in-memory, said Liu Qi, Chairman of Mingxin Qirui, in an interview.

Beyond integration, RRAM offers several other advantages. It consumes less energy than traditional memory because it doesn’t require constant power to maintain its storage state. Furthermore, RRAM devices can be modulated to multiple different resistance states, allowing a single memory cell to store multiple bits of data, potentially leading to higher storage densities in the future.

Industry-Wide Interest and Future Prospects

Mingxin Qirui is not alone in recognizing the potential of RRAM. Major chip manufacturers, including TSMC, are actively investing in research and development related to RRAM patents and products. The technology represents a significant shift in computing architecture, promising to unlock new levels of performance and efficiency for AI and other demanding applications.

This angel round of financing will enable Mingxin Qirui to accelerate its research and development efforts, further solidifying its position in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI chip technology. The company’s focus on RRAM-based PIM solutions positions it to play a significant role in shaping the future of AI computing.
