South Korea Vows Strong Response to North Korea’s Missile Launch
Seoul, South Korea – The South Korean presidential office issued a stern warning on Tuesdayafter North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) earlier that morning. The office emphasized that the government would take a firm stance against Pyongyang’s provocations, leveraging its defense capabilities, the US-South Korea alliance, and trilateral security cooperation with Japan.
A spokesperson for the presidential office, who requested anonymity,condemned the missile launch as a serious provocation. The government will resolutely deter North Korea’s provocative acts based on our defense strength, the US-South Korea alliance, and the trilateral security cooperation between South Korea, the United States, andJapan, the spokesperson stated.
The spokesperson also demanded that North Korea immediately cease all provocative actions, including the recent garbage balloon incidents, where Pyongyang launched balloons carrying propaganda leaflets and other materials across the border into South Korea. The government willclosely monitor North Korea’s provocative activities and prepare to respond to various potential provocations, making every effort to protect the lives and safety of our citizens, the spokesperson added.
The South Korean military detected the launch of multiple SRBMs from the Kaechon area in North Pyongan Province around 6:50 am localtime. The missiles were launched in a northeasterly direction. In response, the National Security Office (NSO) convened a meeting chaired by its Second Deputy Director, In Seong-hwan, to discuss countermeasures.
This latest missile launch marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two Koreas.In recent months, North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests, including the launch of a long-range ballistic missile in February. Pyongyang has also increased its rhetoric against Seoul and Washington, accusing them of pursuing hostile policies.
The South Korean government has been increasingly concerned about North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile capabilities.Seoul has been working to strengthen its defense posture and bolster its alliances with the US and Japan. The trilateral security cooperation between the three countries has gained momentum in recent years, with joint military exercises and intelligence sharing becoming more frequent.
The garbage balloon incidents have also heightened tensions. North Korea has been launching these balloonsfor years, but the frequency and scale of the recent incidents have been particularly concerning. The balloons have been carrying propaganda leaflets, defamatory materials about South Korean leaders, and even small objects like money and food.
Seoul has condemned the balloon launches as a violation of its sovereignty and a threat to national security. TheSouth Korean government has also expressed concern that the balloons could spread COVID-19, as they are often launched from areas of North Korea that are known to have high rates of infection.
In response to the escalating tensions, the South Korean government has been taking a more assertive stance against North Korea. Seoul has increased itsmilitary exercises with the US, deployed more advanced weapons systems, and strengthened its sanctions against Pyongyang.
