Santiago, Chile – Googlehas abandoned its plans to build a $200 million data center in Santiago, Chile,after facing intense local opposition and legal challenges over its potential environmental impact. The company announced on Tuesday that it would start the process anew, citing concerns about the project’s impacton the Chilean capital’s already strained water resources.
The decision comes after a local environmental court partially overturned a 2020 permit allowing the construction of thedata center in February. The court ruled that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, needed to revise its application to address the potential consequences of climate change.
The project, which initially received preliminary authorization in early 2020, hasbeen met with strong resistance from residents and local officials since its inception. Concerns centered around the potential strain the data center would place on Santiago’s dwindling water supply, particularly in a region grappling with a decade-long drought. Data servers require millions ofliters of water annually for cooling purposes.
We will no longer continue with the project license application for the installation of a data center in the Cerrillos community, which was originally submitted and approved in 2020, Google stated in a communication to Chile’s environmental regulator. A new process will beinitiated in due course for a project that uses air-cooled technology at this location, the company added.
The decision marks a significant setback for Google’s expansion plans in Chile, a country it had identified as a strategic location for its data infrastructure. The company had touted the project as a major investment that would create jobs and boostthe local economy.
However, the environmental concerns proved insurmountable, highlighting the growing scrutiny companies face regarding the sustainability of their operations, particularly in regions facing water scarcity.
The use of air-cooled technology in the new proposal represents a shift in Google’s approach, aiming to reduce the project’s water footprint. Air-cooled systems rely on fans and other mechanisms to dissipate heat, eliminating the need for water-intensive cooling methods.
