Lexus Takes Aim at German Rivals with New Design Language and Enhanced Rigidity
Hong Kong, September 11, 2024 – Lexus, the luxury arm of Toyota, is making a bold move to challenge German dominance in the premium automotive market. The Japanese automaker is announcing a new design direction forits vehicles, along with a focus on enhanced body rigidity, aiming to directly compete with the likes of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.
The newdesign language, which will be a departure from Lexus’ current aesthetic, will be first seen in the production versions of the LF-ZC and LF-ZL models. Both vehicles are currently under development at Lexus’ new Japanese design center. SimonHumphries, Lexus’ global design director, has stated that the new design language will be as impactful as the introduction of the spindle grille in 2011, giving each Lexus model a distinct personality and challenging the existing norms of automotive design.
The first model to showcase this new design language will be the production version of the LF-ZC. The concept car, which debuted in October 2023, is a mid-size sedan with a sleek and aggressive design, measuring 4,750mm in length, 1,880mm in width, and 1,390mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,890mm. The LF-ZC is positioned to compete with the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Inside, the LF-ZC will feature adigital cockpit with a new Arene OS infotainment system, offering a range of integrated functions and enhancing the technological feel.
Following the LF-ZC, the LF-ZL will be introduced as a flagship SUV. Even larger than Toyota’s top-of-the-line Century SUV, the LF-ZL will adopt a more sporty design. Its interior will prioritize luxury, featuring a four-seater layout, large screens, and a unique steering wheel design. Like the LF-ZC, it will also be equipped with the Arene OS infotainment system, creating an opulent and technologically advanced environment.
Both theLF-ZC and LF-ZL will benefit from a new modular platform that utilizes one-piece casting technology. This innovative approach aims to significantly reduce production costs and lead times. Furthermore, these models will be equipped with high-energy density and lightweight prismatic battery packs, promising a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. However, Lexus has not yet announced a release date for either vehicle.
The announcement of these new models and the shift in design philosophy signals Lexus’ ambition to become a more prominent player in the luxury car market. By focusing on enhanced rigidity, a fresh design language, and advanced technology, Lexus aims toattract a wider audience and challenge the established German brands.
While the exact specifications and release dates remain under wraps, the introduction of the LF-ZC and LF-ZL promises to be a significant moment for Lexus. The new design language and the focus on technological advancements could potentially reshape the brand’s image and positionit as a serious contender in the luxury car segment.
