SEOUL, South Korea – South Korean President Yoon Seok-youl has called on relevant departments to advance the follow-up measures of the recent South Korea-Japan summit, emphasizing the need for robust cooperation projects and a government-to-government dialogue mechanism to ensure the public feels the tangible effects of improved South Korea-Japan relations.
In a meeting at the presidential office in龙山, President Yoon highlighted the importance of moving forward with the signed agreement between the two nations, which focuses on the protection of overseas citizens. The agreement, which will streamline the procedures for South Korean and Japanese citizens traveling between the two countries, is expected to significantly enhance the safety and convenience for Koreans visiting Japan.
During his discussion with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on September 6, President Yoon reviewed the changes and cooperative achievements that have occurred since the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries in March of last year. He emphasized that, following 12 rounds of South Korea-Japan leadership talks, the government-to-government consultation mechanism, which had previously been suspended, has been fully restored to function.
President Yoon also noted that South Korea and Japan have been actively collaborating in various fields, including diplomacy, defense, economy, high technology, education, and personnel exchanges. He highlighted the lifting of Japan’s export restrictions on key semiconductor materials for South Korea and the re-inclusion of South Korea on Japan’s export whitelist.
Furthermore, he mentioned the renewal of the currency swap agreement between the two countries after an eight-year hiatus, as well as the establishment of economic security dialogue and hydrogen energy cooperation dialogue. The countries are also actively engaged in cooperation in the supply chain and high-tech fields. The scale of personnel exchanges between the two countries is also expected to exceed the previous annual record of 10 million people.
In his address, President Yoon emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, These measures are not only symbolic, but they are also tangible steps that will benefit our people. He further added that the implementation of these measures is crucial to ensure that the public feels the positive effects of the improved relationship between the two nations.
The South Korea-Japan summit and its subsequent measures are seen as a significant step towards mending the strained ties between the two countries. Historically, South Korea and Japan have had a complex relationship, marked by historical issues and territorial disputes. However, recent efforts by both leaders to engage in dialogue and cooperation have been welcomed by the international community.
The renewed efforts to strengthen economic and technological cooperation are particularly important given the global economic landscape. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, regional cooperation and trade agreements have become more crucial than ever. South Korea and Japan, both economic powerhouses, have the potential to significantly contribute to the stability and growth of the region.
In conclusion, President Yoon Seok-youl’s call for the steadfast implementation of post-summit measures with Japan is a crucial step towards improving bilateral relations. By focusing on cooperation and dialogue, the two countries can work together to overcome historical issues and build a stronger, more prosperous future for their citizens.
