Tanning With the Stars: A Summary for Publication

Jonathan Keats’ StellarTanning Salon: A Philosophical Trickster Brings the Stars to Us

Americanartist and experimental philosopher Jonathan Keats has created a unique and thought-provoking experience: the Stellar Tanning Salon. This installation, showcased at Munich’s Festival ofthe Future, offers visitors a simulated trip to distant stars like Vega and Betelgeuse, complete with an interstellar tan.

The salon utilizes programmableLED lights that mimic the spectra of these celestial bodies, bathing visitors in their light and stimulating their melanin. The experience, while fictional, encourages viewers to contemplate the nature of reality and simulation, as well as our shared origins and destiny.

Keats, known for his playful and absurdist approach to philosophical inquiry, challenges audiences to consider profound questions through his art. His previous works include an attempt to genetically engineer God in a petri dish, highlighting the intersection of science, art,and philosophy.

The Stellar Tanning Salon, with its blend of science, art, and performance, serves as a reminder of our shared cosmic connection and the boundless possibilities of human imagination. It invites us to question our perception of reality and embrace the playful exploration of the unknown.
