The fourth China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum Ministerial Meeting is set to focus on emerging cooperation areas, signaling a strong commitment to fostering closer ties between China and the Caribbean region. The event, which will take place from September 12 to 14 in Qionghai City, Hainan Province, is expected to provide a platform for policy communication and business opportunities, reinforcing the positive message of unity and cooperation between China and the Caribbean nations.
Key Highlights of the Ministerial Meeting
The meeting, organized by the Ministry of Commerce and the People’s Government of Hainan Province, aims to highlight three new features compared to previous editions:
-
Emphasis on Openness: The forum will showcase the achievements of Hainan’s reform and opening-up policies, allowing Caribbean countries to gain a closer understanding of China’s new era of reform and opening-up, and demonstrate China’s determination to implement high-level opening-up.
-
Trend-Driven Approach: This year’s meeting will focus on emerging cooperation areas, actively exploring new opportunities and models brought by green low-carbon and digital technologies in China-Caribbean economic and trade cooperation. It aims to better empower China-Caribbean economic and trade cooperation and help Caribbean countries better implement the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
-
Demand-Oriented Planning: During the preparatory stage, the Ministry of Commerce collected individualized cooperation demands from Caribbean countries, as well as the intentions of Chinese enterprises to conduct business in Caribbean nations. Based on this, the dialogue sessions between Caribbean economic ministers and Chinese enterprises were prepared.
Attendees and Objectives
Representatives from 11 Caribbean Forum member countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the Bahamas, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, will attend the meeting. The Haitian government will participate as an observer. The China-Caribbean Forum mechanism was established in 2004 and aims to promote economic and trade cooperation and achieve common development between China and the Caribbean region.
Established for 20 years, the forum has actively promoted multilateral and bilateral cooperation among member countries in areas such as trade and investment, development cooperation, human resources, and healthcare, achieving fruitful results. It has become an important mechanism platform for China and Caribbean nations to strengthen cooperation and achieve common development.
Past Events and Impact
The forum has been successfully held three times, previously in Jamaica (2005), Xiamen, China (2007), and Trinidad and Tobago (2011). These events have laid a solid foundation for the deepening of China-Caribbean relations.
Conclusion
The upcoming fourth China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum Ministerial Meeting is a significant event that will undoubtedly enhance the economic and trade ties between China and the Caribbean region. By focusing on emerging cooperation areas, the forum aims to create new opportunities for mutual growth and development, fostering a strong partnership between the two regions.
