Taiwan’s iThome, a leading technology news and media platform, recently released the sixth installment of its 2024 CIO Survey series, focusing on the emerging technologies in the high-tech manufacturing industry. The report provides valuable insights into the current technology adoption trends and the strategic adjustments being made by companies in the sector.

Key Findings of the Survey

The survey reveals that the technology adoption landscape in the high-tech manufacturing industry has undergone significant changes compared to last year. Among the technologies experiencing a surge in adoption rates are Generative AI (GAI), carbon footprint dashboards, FIDO, DevSecOps, SBOM software bill of materials, and AIOps. These technologies have seen a surge in popularity, indicating a shift in strategic priorities among CIOs.

IT Goals and ESG Focus

IT security, enterprise sustainability, and AI are the top three IT goals for high-tech manufacturing CIOs this year. The priority of ESG sustainability goals has also risen compared to last year. Approximately 20% of high-tech companies have already started adopting generative AI applications, with some even expanding their adoption scale. Another 40% are preparing to introduce these technologies.

GAI and Other Emerging Technologies

In high-tech manufacturing, IT departments are often the first to adopt GAI technologies. Many technical tasks are being assisted by GAI, with 30% of companies’ IT departments now capable of using GAI to learn new skills.

The survey also highlights the following key points:

  • GAI, carbon footprint dashboards, DevSecOps, and AIOps are the technologies experiencing the most significant increase in adoption rates, with an increase of 15% in the number of companies planning to adopt these technologies.
  • Kubernetes container technology and multi-cloud hybrid cloud architecture remain the mainstream IT infrastructure, but the adoption rate of multi-cloud architecture is declining, warranting further observation.
  • High-tech manufacturing industries are relatively proactive in measuring the cost of cloud adoption, with FinOps adoption trends beginning to rise in the industry.
  • Several technologies have fallen into the cooling category this year, including 5G private networks, SDDC software-defined data centers, and SRE in IT infrastructure. Additionally, AIoT, blockchain technology, and GitOps have also fallen into the cooling zone.

Methodology and Demographics

The iThome CIO and Security Survey was conducted from February 15 to March 15, 2024, involving online questionnaires from IT and security managers in large Taiwanese enterprises, past CIO Survey enterprises, government agencies, and universities. A total of 422 valid questionnaires were collected, with 71.8% of respondents being CIOs and 62.8% being IT security senior executives. The survey covered industries such as general manufacturing (17.8%), high-tech manufacturing (22.7%), services (23.7%), finance (12.8%), healthcare (13.3%), and government and schools (9.7%).

Conclusion

The iThome 2024 CIO Survey series provides valuable insights into the emerging technologies and strategic adjustments in the high-tech manufacturing industry. As companies continue to adapt to the rapidly evolving technology landscape, it is crucial for them to stay informed about the latest trends and make informed decisions regarding their technology investments.
