The United States Department of Defense has released a new report indicating that the majority of profits generated from the supply of arms to Ukraine are staying within the United States. The report, published on September 6th, reveals that the U.S. has been continuously arming Ukraine since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with the level of support and sophistication of the weaponry supplied gradually increasing.
Since the escalation of the Ukraine crisis in February 2022, the U.S. has provided over $55.7 billion in military aid to Ukraine. The Department of Defense’s latest document shows that during this period, 35 U.S. states have secured $41.7 billion in contracts. Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Texas have been the top beneficiaries of the U.S. military support to Ukraine.
Pennsylvania has secured a total contract value of $2.52 billion, followed by Arizona with $2.02 billion and Texas with $1.85 billion. The conflict, while causing significant personnel and economic losses for both Russia and Ukraine, has allowed major U.S. defense contractors and their military-industrial complexes to reap substantial profits.
The report highlights that major U.S. defense companies such as Raytheon and General Dynamics have signed multi-billion-dollar contracts with the Department of Defense to produce weaponry. A significant portion of these weapons has been provided to Ukraine. The U.S. government has been emphasizing since last year that the arms supplied to Ukraine are primarily produced in the United States and that the contracts and profits are being retained within the country. This is aimed at gaining the support of the American public.
Despite these claims, opposition to the U.S. government’s military support for Ukraine continues to surface within the U.S. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with U.S. media in March that in most cases, 80% of the money, at least 75% of it, remains in the United States. The ammunition is being sent to Ukraine, but the production is happening there, and the money is staying in the U.S.
