Washington, D.C. – The first Korea-US Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) tabletop exercise (TTS) was conducted in Washington, D.C. from September 5 to 6, according to a report by Yonhap News Agency on September 7.
The exercise involved officials from both countries’ national security, defense, military, foreign affairs, and intelligence departments. The participants simulated a nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula, with the United States providing extended deterrence to South Korea and the two sides coordinating and communicating on relevant policies.
This training is a follow-up measure to the Washington Declaration jointly issued by the Korea-US leaders in April last year. The Ministry of Defense stated that the Korea-US alliance reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to extended deterrence through this exercise. The Korea-US alliance will continue to develop nuclear deterrence exercises and training activities on the Korean Peninsula by utilizing routine tabletop exercises (TTX) and tabletop simulation training through the Nuclear Consultative Group.
It is believed that the tabletop simulation training of the Nuclear Consultative Group will further strengthen the Korea-US extended deterrence cooperation along with the established consultation mechanisms related to extended deterrence, such as the Extended Deterrence Strategic Consultation Group (EDSCG).
In June this year, the Korea-US Nuclear Consultative Group held its third meeting and basically completed the work of drafting the Joint Guidelines for the Korea-US combined combat power to respond to a nuclear attack by North Korea. The guidelines include the unified operation of South Korea’s conventional weapons and the United States’ nuclear weapons in response to a nuclear attack initiated by North Korea.
The exercise is part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen the Korea-US alliance and enhance the deterrence against North Korea’s nuclear threat. It also reflects the commitment of both countries to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
The tabletop exercise is a crucial step in reinforcing the Korea-US alliance’s ability to respond to nuclear threats and ensure the security of the region. By conducting such exercises, both countries aim to demonstrate their readiness to defend their allies and maintain regional stability.
The exercise comes at a time when tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high. The recent missile launches by North Korea have raised concerns about the security situation in the region. The exercise is seen as a demonstration of the Korea-US alliance’s resolve to deter any aggressive actions by North Korea.
The participation of officials from various departments of both countries highlights the importance of the exercise in promoting cooperation and coordination between the two allies. It also underscores the commitment of both countries to ensure the security and stability of the Korean Peninsula.
In conclusion, the first Korea-US Nuclear Consultative Group tabletop exercise held in the US is a significant step towards strengthening the Korea-US alliance and enhancing the deterrence against North Korea’s nuclear threat. It reflects the commitment of both countries to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and ensure the security of their allies.
