Telegram CEO Pavel Durov Arrested in France, Blames Authorities for Targeting Him

Paris, France – Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of theencrypted messaging app Telegram, has been arrested in France and is currently facing charges related to alleged criminal activity on the platform. This arrest comes after French authorities launched aninvestigation into Telegram’s lack of regulatory oversight, which they believe has contributed to a rise in criminal activity, including child pornography, drug trafficking, and fraud.

Durov, a Russian-born French citizen residing in Dubai, was detained in late August and has since spoken out for the first time, expressing his frustration with the French authorities. In a statement posted on his Telegram channel, Durov argued that the authorities should have targeted the company itself rather than him personally. He maintains that Telegram has a dedicated team in the EU to handle requests from law enforcement agencies, including a publicly available email address.

French authorities have multipleways to contact me and request assistance, Durov wrote. As a French citizen, I am a regular visitor to the French Consulate in Dubai. Recently, when they requested it, I personally helped them establish a hotline with Telegram to address terrorist threats in France.

Durov further criticized the French authorities for theirapproach, claiming that they are using outdated laws to hold him accountable for the actions of third-party users on the platform. It is a mistake to use laws from the pre-smartphone era to accuse the CEO of crimes committed by third parties on the platform he manages, he stated.

Telegram, known for itsstrong encryption and commitment to user privacy, has faced criticism for its perceived lack of cooperation with law enforcement agencies. While Durov denies the platform’s reputation as a lawless haven, he acknowledges that Telegram has sometimes struggled to find the right balance between privacy and security when dealing with national regulators.

Despite the ongoing legalbattle, Durov remains optimistic about the future of Telegram. He acknowledges that the platform’s rapid growth has led to some growing pains, making it more susceptible to criminal misuse. However, he assures users that he is committed to improving the platform’s security and addressing these issues.

I have made itmy personal goal to ensure that we significantly improve this aspect, he wrote. We have already initiated this process internally, and I will soon share more details about our progress.

Durov’s arrest has sparked a debate about the responsibility of social media platforms for criminal activity occurring on their platforms. While some arguethat platforms like Telegram should take more responsibility for policing their content, others contend that such measures would undermine user privacy and freedom of expression.

The case against Durov is still ongoing. He is currently under house arrest in France and must pay a €5 million bail to avoid imprisonment. He is prohibited from leaving the countryuntil the case is resolved.

This incident highlights the growing tension between law enforcement agencies and encrypted messaging platforms. As technology continues to evolve, the debate surrounding online privacy, security, and accountability is likely to intensify.
