China’s Golmud-Korla Railway, a crucial transportation artery connecting the western province of Qinghai with the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, has recently completed its expansion and renovation project, marking the full opening of the newly constructed 28 unmanned stations along the Xinjiang section.
Expansion Details and Background
The Golmud-Korla Railway, which spans a total of 1,206 kilometers, with the Xinjiang section accounting for 734 kilometers, was initially opened in December 2020. The expansion project, which commenced in September 2023, was driven by the rapid growth in the transportation of goods such as coal, cotton, steel, and ore in Xinjiang, as well as the completion of the Heshi Railway. This has led to a significant increase in the number of freight trains running on the Golmud-Korla Railway, from just two pairs daily at the outset to 14 pairs currently, nearly saturating the existing line’s capacity.
New Stations and Their Significance
The expansion project includes the addition of 28 new stations, namely Tai Tema Lake, Camel Spring, Seven Peaks, and Tower stations, among others. All these stations are unmanned and are situated within the Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang. Notably, six of these stations are located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters.
These unmanned stations, which are designed to allow trains to meet and pass each other safely, are crucial for enhancing the efficiency and safety of train operations. The existing 20 stations along the Xinjiang section have station intervals of over 40 kilometers between them. With the introduction of these new stations, the average station interval has been reduced to 14.2 kilometers, with the longest interval now at 16.9 kilometers. This has transformed long intervals into short intervals, thereby increasing the daily train traffic from 15 pairs to 34.2 pairs.
Increased Transport Capacity
The expansion has also led to a significant increase in the railway’s cargo transportation capacity, from 16 million tons annually to 33.57 million tons. This increase in capacity is expected to effectively release the train passing capacity of the line.
Conclusion
The completion of the Golmud-Korla Railway’s expansion in Xinjiang represents a significant step forward in improving transportation infrastructure in the region. With the introduction of these new unmanned stations, the railway will be better equipped to handle the growing demand for transportation of goods, thereby contributing to the economic development of the region.
