In the original version of Journey to the West, Tang Sanzang’s cassock is called Jinjian cassock, which is one of the magic weapons given to him by Guanyin Bodhisattva. The production of Jinjian cassock is very delicate. It is made of ice silkworms, turned into threads by skilled craftsmen, woven by fairies, and made by goddesses. The square clusters of embroidery are sewn, and the pieces are piled up to make brocade. This cassock not only has the function of self-defense and insect repellent, but also has seven treasures embedded in it, which can be invulnerable to water and fire. When the Tathagata Buddha introduced this cassock, he mentioned one of its functions, which is to avoid falling into reincarnation.
In the 16th chapter of Journey to the West, Tang Sanzang and his apprentice came to a temple called Guanyin Temple on their way to the West to obtain scriptures. When the abbot of Guanyin Temple, Elder Jinchi, saw this Jinjian cassock, he wanted to kill it and take it for himself. That night, Tang Sanzang and his disciples, who were sleeping in the Zen room, were threatened by a fire. Fortunately, Sun Wukong noticed the crisis in time and borrowed a fire shelter from the South Heaven Gate, so that the four masters and disciples survived. However, the black bear took advantage of the fire and stole the precious brocade cassock given to Tang Sanzang by the Buddha. Sun Wukong fought with the black bear many times, but failed to get it back, so he had to ask for help from Guanyin Bodhisattva of the South China Sea.
In summary, Tang Sanzang’s brocade cassock is one of the magic weapons given to him by Guanyin Bodhisattva. It has the function of self-defense and insect repellent, and can be invulnerable to water and fire. In the 16th chapter of “Journey to the West”, Elder Jinchi became greedy and wanted to take the cassock for himself, which led to the threat of a fire. In the end, the black bear took advantage of the fire and stole the cassock.
