South Korea’s Population Declines for Fourth Consecutive Year, Average Age Hits44.8
Seoul, South Korea – South Korea’s population has continued its downward trend for the fourth consecutive year, according to the 2024 Administrative Safety Statistics Yearbook released by the Ministry of the Interiorand Safety on August 27th. The report revealed a 0.22% decrease in the registered population compared to the previous year, bringing thetotal to 51,325,329 as of December 31st, 2023. This marks the fourth consecutive year of population decline, with the population having fallen from 51.83 million in 2020.
The aging population is a significant factor contributing to this decline. The average age of the South Korean population has risen by 0.6 years to 44.8, with men averaging43.7 years old and women 45.9 years old. This trend reflects the country’s rapidly aging demographic, with the number of elderly individuals increasing while the birth rate remains low.
