广西 and Brunei Strengthen Economic Ties, Push for Economic Corridor Development

In a move to deepen economic cooperation and foster regional growth, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China and Brunei have embarked on a collaborative effort to construct an economic corridor. The initiative, marking the 10th anniversary of the Guangxi-Brunei Economic Corridor, is set to strengthen ties between the two nations and boost cooperation within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Eastern Growth Area.

During a visit to Brunei from August 24 to 26, 2024, Liu Ning, the Secretary of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region’s Communist Party Committee, led a delegation to participate in various economic activities, aiming to enhance friendship and practical cooperation across multiple sectors. This engagement is expected to contribute significantly to the deepening of the China-ASEAN Eastern Growth Area partnership.

In a meeting with Brunei’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, Dato Seri Setia Haji刘光明, Liu Ning highlighted the success of the Guangxi Beibu Gulf International Port Group’s involvement in the development of the Brunei Muara Port. Since its participation, the port has become the most efficient in the ASEAN Eastern Growth Area and a vital bridge for economic cooperation between China and Brunei. Liu Ning expressed the desire for both sides to further enhance connectivity, fostering the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Dato Seri Setia Haji刘光明 echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the role of the Guangxi-Brunei Economic Corridor as the foundation of the economic partnership between the two nations. As Brunei pushes for economic diversification, it looks forward to collaborating closely with Guangxi in sectors such as food production, downstream oil and gas, tourism, services, and information and communication technology, seeking mutual benefits and shared development.

Throughout the visit, economic departments and key enterprises from both Guangxi and Brunei engaged in promotional events and interactive sessions, focusing on investment environments, economic cooperation, and industrial collaboration. The visit culminated in the signing of several agreements, indicating a commitment to realizing the potential of the economic corridor.

The economic corridor project is not only expected to bolster trade and investment but also to facilitate people-to-people exchanges, infrastructure development, and technological innovation. It aligns with China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to promote connectivity and cooperation among countries along the ancient Silk Road.

In recent years, Guangxi has emerged as a crucial gateway for China’s engagement with Southeast Asia, while Brunei, with its strategic location and abundant resources, presents significant opportunities for economic collaboration. The economic corridor is thus a strategic move to unlock the full potential of both regions, fostering a more integrated and prosperous ASEAN bloc.

As the two nations celebrate a decade of economic corridor cooperation, the signing of new agreements and the commitment to deepen ties signal a promising future for Guangxi and Brunei’s economic partnership. The joint efforts are expected to drive growth, create new business opportunities, and contribute to the overall stability and development of the region.

In conclusion, the enhanced cooperation between Guangxi and Brunei underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen their economic relationship and work together for mutual prosperity. With the construction of the economic corridor, the two regions are poised to unlock new avenues of collaboration and foster a more interconnected and dynamic ASEAN Eastern Growth Area.
