Taiwan Youth Build Dreams in Fujian’s Fuding: Six Years of Cultivation, Igniting New Hope for RuralRevitalization

NINGDE, FUJIAN, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) — “Six years is a stage, not an endpoint, but anew beginning,” said Zhou Hongyu, a young Taiwanese man, recently to Xinhua reporters. He said he will continue to encourage college students to participate in local rural revitalization efforts.

In early 2018, Zhou Hongyujoined the Tsinghua University Rural Revitalization Practice Team and arrived at Yushan Island in Fuding City, Ningde, Fujian Province. He settled in Dongjiao Village and embarked on his journey of rural revitalization. On May26 of the same year, Tsinghua University and Fuding City signed a rural revitalization school-local cooperation agreement, establishing the country’s first “Tsinghua University Rural Revitalization Work Station” on Yushan Island.

Over the past six years, Zhou Hongyu and his team have led over20 batches of more than 800 students to carry out practical work in various townships in Fuding City. They have listened to the voices of the countryside, witnessed its beauty, and explored a path to rural revitalization with Min Dong characteristics.

They transformed a dilapidated fish sauce warehouse into a multi-functionalrural revitalization hall with tea drinking, reading, movie watching, and research learning functions. It provides villagers with services such as reading, watching movies, remote teaching, and training, and also offers tourists a place to rest and buy local products. They also renovated old toilets, converted residential houses into guesthouses, transformed vacantland into gardens, and turned idle spaces into villager sports venues, pressing the “fast forward” button for the development of the island fishing village.

In addition to space renovation, Zhou Hongyu’s team has also proposed design solutions and brand planning for township brands such as “Yushan Youli,” “YunzhongGuanyang,” and “Qianqi Lanye,” establishing brand images, enhancing brand value, and leading local income growth.

“Our team has gradually expanded from a single island fishing village to multiple townships across the city, expanding the coverage of university talent resources services. We have now launched work in 11 townships,” Zhou Hongyu said. They work hand-in-hand with villagers to renovate their homes, discuss village affairs, listen to their voices, and carry out various rural revitalization efforts based on their needs.

To date, Zhou Hongyu and his team have renovated over 10 public spaces, including viewing platformsand tourist toilets, and have completed the implementation of over 40 project achievements in public facilities, agricultural products, and traditional craft inheritance development.

Today, Yushan Island is attracting more and more college students for practical training. Every year, Zhou Hongyu’s team arranges social practice work for students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and foreign countries on Yushan Island, allowing them to get to know and become rooted in rural areas. This year, Zhou Hongyu further collaborated with universities such as the Chinese University of Hong Kong to encourage students from Hong Kong and Macao to regularly serve rural areas in Fuding, participating in villagehistory research, villager interviews, old house renovation, and rural construction and creation work.

“Our work philosophy is ‘starting with practice, not just practice, with dreams in our hearts, light in our eyes, warmth in our hands, and mud on our feet,'” Zhou Hongyu said. In the future, hehopes to encourage more students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and foreign countries to integrate and become rooted in various corners of Fuding City, serving the countryside and jointly igniting new hope for rural revitalization.
