## Visiting Yunnan’s “Old Soldier Village” in Wanting: Ancestors Fought in the War, Descendants Guard the Frontier

Xinhe Villagein Wanting Town, Ruili City, Yunnan Province, sits on the China-Myanmar border, with a winding boundary river separating the two countries. Known asthe “Old Soldier Village,” most of the villagers are descendants of the Chinese Expeditionary Force. Their forefathers fought in the war against Japan, and now, their descendants continue to guard this borderland.

79 years ago, after theChinese Expeditionary Force recaptured Wanting, many veterans stayed behind, settling down and starting families in the area that is now Xinhe Village. Today, the veterans of the Expeditionary Force in the village have all passed away, leaving behindonly a few widows and their descendants.

Li Honggang, an old border guard, is a typical example. In 1972, he was injured while experimenting with agricultural machinery, resulting in the amputation of his right arm. His father’s words inspired him to become a border guard, protecting the riverthat was once ravaged by war. “At that time, I felt like the sky was falling. One evening, walking by the river, my father told me: the peace of this river was bought with the blood of his comrades. He hoped I could pull myself together and take over their duty to guard the peace here…”

Li Honggang’s father, Li Wang, was a veteran of the Expeditionary Force. He and his fellow soldiers, in the midst of war, fought bravely for their country, venturing into foreign lands. Although they have left us, their spirit remains in this land, inspiring their descendants to continue guarding thefrontier and building their homeland.

The village history museum in Xinhe Village records the journey of the veterans from the battlefield to their settled lives. To make a living, the veterans initially relied on transporting import and export goods. Later, at the government’s call, they reclaimed land for self-sufficiency, eventually developinginto a village. Today, Xinhe Village has grown into a large village with 267 households and 1,005 people. It boasts diverse industries including Dendrobium cultivation, spice planting, animal husbandry, transportation, tourism, catering, and homestays. The village is beautiful and prosperous, with harmonious neighbors, presenting a scene of prosperity and strength.

Li Honggang has been guarding the China-Myanmar border river and boundary markers for over 50 years. Despite being over 70, he still regularly repaints his “old friend,” the boundary marker, and shares stories of his father with tourists. “Without the sacrifices of our forefathers, we wouldn’t have the happy lives we have today,” Li Honggang said. As long as he can walk, he will continue to guard the China-Myanmar border river, continue to tell the story of history, and carry on the spirit of his forefathers.

Onthe cultural wall behind Li Honggang, the “Old Soldier Village Introduction” concludes with these words: “In the fading memories of history, the smoke and fire of war have long dissipated. Under the peaceful sun, we remember the bloody battles that took place on this land, and we strive to write a new chapter forWanting in the new era,” along with the two large characters “Peace” and “Unity.”

The story of Xinhe Village is a microcosm of the unity, struggle, and mutual support of the Chinese nation. The veterans guarded peace with their lives and blood, and their descendants are building their homeland with theirhard work and wisdom. Together, they are writing the magnificent chapter of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
