Title: “Hot and Humid Weather Hits Vegetable Prices, Localities Join Hands to Ensure Supply”

Keywords: High Temperature, Vegetable Prices, Supply Guarantee

Content: Recently, many regions in China have been hit by hot and humid weather, which has hindered vegetable production and led to an increase in vegetable prices. According to a report by the CCTV News client, the weighted average price of vegetables in the Xinfadi Market in Beijing in August was 4 yuan per kilogram, a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. Vegetables such as cabbage, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli experienced significant price increases.

In Hefei, Anhui, the retail average price of vegetables exceeded 7 yuan per kilogram, with 20 out of 30 vegetable varieties seeing price increases, with rises of about 6% to 8% for items like cucumbers, white radishes, and winter melons. In Nanjing, Jiangsu, the prices of some vegetables like string beans, long beans, and eggplants have slightly increased, with noticeable rises for cucumbers, mung bean sprouts, and chrysanthemum leaves.

The vegetable wholesale market in Jinan, Shandong, also faces a shortage of vegetable supply, but to stabilize vegetable prices and ensure the supply to the public dining tables, the market has increased the supply of vegetables from places like Zhangjiakou, Hebei, and has increased the frequency of shipments.

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs shows that the average wholesale price of 28 vegetable varieties nationwide rose by 9.6% month-on-month in July, fell by 2.0% year-on-year, and was 5.1% higher than the average of the past three years. Vegetables such as cucumbers, onions, spinach, and cauliflower experienced price increases of over 30%.

Zhang Jing, a research fellow at the Institute of Agricultural Information of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, stated that the hot and humid weather in summer is not conducive to vegetable growth. Moreover, early July saw heavy rainfall and flooding in some areas, affecting vegetable production, harvesting, and transportation, leading to a shortage of vegetable supply and an increase in vegetable prices. However, with the arrival of new harvests of vegetables such as cucumbers, it is expected that vegetable prices will gradually decline.

Responding to the rise in vegetable prices, citizens expressed understanding, believing that it was due to a reduction in supply. They anticipate that as the supply of vegetables increases, prices will decrease.
