Rising campus violence and safety issues in the United States are putting more students at risk, according to a new report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The report found that the proportion of students reporting violence at school or safety concerns leading to absences has increased. The percentage of students reporting being threatened or harmed by weapons at school has risen from 7% to 9%. Similarly, the rate of students experiencing bullying at school has increased from 15% to 19%. Additionally, the proportion of students who miss school due to safety concerns at school or on the way to school has also risen from 9% to 13%.

The report also shows a general worsening trend in suicidal thoughts and behaviors among American teenagers over the past decade. In 2013, 30% of high school students reported experiencing persistent sadness or feelings of worthlessness, which increased to 40% in 2023. The percentage of high school students who reported seriously considering attempting suicide and those who made suicide plans also increased, from 17% in 2013 to 20% in 2023 for the former, and from 14% in 2013 to 16% in 2023 for the latter. The percentage of high school students who attempted suicide increased by 1% over the 10-year period.

The new data in the report also indicates that nearly a third of students report experiencing racial discrimination in school. Asian students are more likely to report experiencing racial discrimination at school.

In response to the worsening campus safety issues, the U.S. education sector and various sectors of society need to take effective measures to enhance school safety, improve students’ self-protection awareness, and provide necessary psychological support and intervention to help students cope with psychological stress and challenges, ensuring school safety and protecting the physical and mental well-being of students. At the same time, there is a need to strengthen efforts in preventing and combating campus violence to create a safe and harmonious learning environment for students.
