LANZHOU, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — Gracie Kwong, who is the president of the Hong Kong Zhuhai Association, expressed her hope to promote the cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Dunhuang through dance performances.
Last year, Kwong visited Dunhuang as a national representative for Hong Kong and was deeply impressed by the large-scale scenic sound-and-light show “Thousand Hands and Eyes,” which was held in Hong Kong and Zhuhai in April this year. She said the performances were so captivating that she planned to organize a tour of the show in the cities of the Greater Bay Area next year.
“The first time I saw the performance of ‘Thousand Hands and Eyes,’ I was deeply moved by the dancers’ graceful movements and their strength and passion,” Kwong said on August 4, during an interview with Xinhua News Agency. “The show allows Hong Kong residents to appreciate the charm and profound cultural connotations of Dunhuang art up close and in a direct way, and it also injects new elements and vitality into the cultural development of Hong Kong.”
Kwong noted that the people of the Greater Bay Area are eager to learn about Dunhuang culture but are far from it, without direct flights, making it difficult for them to enjoy Dunhuang-themed dance shows close to home. She hopes to invite more Dunhuang-themed performances to Hong Kong and nearby cities.
Recently, the international tourism city of Dunhuang, a Silk Road landmark in Gansu Province, has introduced and developed four classic shows inspired by Dunhuang, including the large-scale desert show “Dunhuang Splendor,” the large-scale indoor interactive show “Meet Dunhuang Again,” the cave-style immersive experience show “Music of Dunhuang,” and the large-scale scenic sound-and-light show “Thousand Hands and Eyes.” Since the summer of this year, the “four shows” have been performing simultaneously, and Dunhuang-themed performances have become a new favorite for Silk Road tours.
Kwong said that through performances inspired by Dunhuang culture, the audience in the Greater Bay Area can gain a more direct understanding of the profound Dunhuang culture. She looks forward to promoting a wider range of Dunhuang performances to the Greater Bay Area to further exchange and blend the cultures of both sides.
Gansu and Hong Kong have achieved fruitful results in cultural and artistic exchanges. Besides large-scale Dunhuang cultural exhibitions in Hong Kong, there have been exciting dance performances and interactions. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s Department of Home and Youth Affairs has co-organized the “Dunhuang Youth Internship Program” with the Dunhuang Academy since 2018, making Dunhuang culture more familiar in Hong Kong.
Kwong believes that Gansu has abundant cultural resources, while Hong Kong has an international perspective and a diversified platform for cultural exchanges. The exchange and blending of the two cultures will inject new vitality into the cultural development of the Greater Bay Area and the entire country.
