Typhoon Gema struck, causing heavy rainfall in multiple areas of Guangdong Province.
BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) — Affected by the outer circulation of Typhoon Gema, parts of Heyuan, Meizhou and eastern Guangdong experienced heavy to torrential rainfall from July 25 to 26. Localized areas even saw extreme rainfall, leading to overflow of some small and medium-sized rivers. Meteorological and hydrological departments forecast that Guangdong’s majority will continue to experience heavy to torrential rainfall over the next two days. The Huanjiang River’s Sanheba Station may face overflow in the early hours of July 27.
In light of this, the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Commission (NDRC) initiated a Level 4 emergency response for flood control in Guangdong on July 26 at 19:00, in accordance with relevant provisions of the “National Flood and Drought Prevention and Mitigation contingency plan.” This response aims to strengthen monitoring and early warnings, ensure the safety of people’s lives and property, and effectively respond to potential flood and waterlogging disasters.
Governments at all levels in Guangdong and relevant departments have taken swift action, strengthening monitoring of river levels and initiating emergency rescue preparations. At the same time, warning information has been released to the public through various channels, reminding residents to take precautions and ensure traffic flow, ready for potential flood measures.
The strong rainfall brought by Typhoon Gema poses a severe test to Guangdong’s flood control efforts. Levels of flood control departments at all levels will closely monitor weather changes, issue early warnings in a timely manner, ensure that emergency response measures are in place, and minimize the potential losses caused by the disaster.
