Two senior officials in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region have been held accountablefor a barbecue restaurant explosion that killed 19 people and injured 37 others in Yinchuan, the regional capital, on Dec. 31, 2022.
Ma Tingli, former Party chief of Xingqing District in Yinchuan, and Zhang Yong, former head of thedistrict government, have been given serious warnings within the Party and removed from their posts, according to a statement released by the regional disciplinary watchdog on Tuesday.
The statement said that Ma and Zhang failed to effectively perform their duties in supervising safety production and neglected their responsibilities in eliminating potential safety hazards, which led to the major accident.
The explosion, which occurred at around 11:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, was caused by a gas leak in the restaurant’s kitchen. The blast destroyed the restaurant and damaged nearby buildings.
An investigation team sent by the Ministry of Emergency Management concluded that theaccident was caused by a combination of factors, including the restaurant’s failure to comply with safety regulations, the lack of effective supervision by local authorities, and the inadequate response to the emergency.
The team urged local authorities to strengthen safety inspections and supervision, improve emergency response capabilities, and enhance public awareness of safety.
