Beijing, July 26, 2025 (China News Service) – Recent reports of Chikungunya fever cases in China have triggered heightened public awareness and a surge in demand for mosquito repellent products. The disease, transmitted by mosquitoes, has prompted widespread mosquito control efforts across multiple regions.
Given that Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease, prevention is key, stated a health official from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. We urge the public to take necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites, especially during peak mosquito activity hours.
The increased concern has translated into a significant spike in online searches and purchases of mosquito repellent products. E-commerce platforms have reported a dramatic increase in search volume for terms like mosquito repellent, anti-mosquito spray, and mosquito nets. Many consumers are reportedly rushing to purchase these products, with some even placing orders late at night to ensure they are protected.
I was really worried when I heard about the Chikungunya cases, said Ms. Li, a Beijing resident. I immediately went online and bought several bottles of mosquito repellent and a mosquito net for my bedroom. Better safe than sorry.
Local governments are also stepping up efforts to control mosquito populations through measures such as insecticide spraying and the elimination of mosquito breeding grounds. Public health campaigns are being launched to educate citizens on how to prevent mosquito bites and recognize the symptoms of Chikungunya fever.
While Chikungunya fever is generally not life-threatening, it can cause debilitating joint pain, fever, and rash. There is no specific treatment for the disease, and recovery can take several weeks or even months.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the following measures to prevent Chikungunya fever:
- Use mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors.
- Stay in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
- Eliminate standing water around your home, as this is where mosquitoes breed.
The recent surge in Chikungunya fever awareness underscores the importance of public health education and preventative measures in controlling the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. As the summer months continue, vigilance and proactive steps will be crucial in protecting communities from this emerging health threat.
