Beijing, June 23rd, 2025 – In response to recent remarks made by Taiwan’s regional leader Lai Ching-te, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office (国台办), Chen Binhua, issued a strong statement today, asserting that Lai’s pronouncements are riddled with falsehoods and will ultimately be relegated to historical irrelevance.
The statement came in response to a question from a journalist regarding Lai Ching-te’s Ten Lectures on National Unity, the first of which was delivered on June 22nd. The journalist sought the Taiwan Affairs Office’s commentary on the cross-strait relations content of the speech.
Chen Binhua stated that Lai Ching-te’s address on June 22nd was replete with lies and deception, hostility and provocation. He further accused Lai of deliberately distorting and fragmenting history while peddling separatist rhetoric.
This statement underscores the increasingly tense relationship between mainland China and Taiwan under Lai Ching-te’s leadership. The Taiwan Affairs Office’s strong language reflects Beijing’s unwavering stance on the Taiwan issue and its determination to counter what it perceives as separatist tendencies.
The future of cross-strait relations remains uncertain, but this latest exchange highlights the deep divisions and the challenges that lie ahead in finding common ground. Further observation is warranted to see how Lai Ching-te will respond to the criticism and whether there is any possibility of de-escalation.
