Mountain View, CA – Google has officially launched its Search Live voice search feature in the United States, marking a significant step towards conversational AI-powered search. Available on both iOS and Android Google apps, Search Live leverages the power of the Gemini model to enable users to engage in natural, ongoing voice conversations with the search engine.
This new feature, accessible after enabling the AI mode in Google Labs, allows users to simply tap the Live icon and pose their queries verbally. Google responds with AI-generated voice answers, facilitating a seamless and continuous dialogue without the need for repeated activations.
Search Live is designed to be the ideal assistant when you’re on the go or occupied with other tasks, Google stated in its announcement. The company highlighted scenarios such as packing luggage while simultaneously gathering information, demonstrating the feature’s utility in multitasking situations.
In a demonstration provided by Google, a user inquired about preventing linen dresses from wrinkling in a suitcase. Gemini promptly provided a voice response, showcasing the speed and convenience of the new feature. Crucially, the interaction occurs without requiring the user to exit the interface or repeatedly tap icons. The conversation can even continue while the user switches to other applications.
Users also have the option to review a written transcript of the voice responses. Furthermore, they can seamlessly transition from voice to text input if desired. All Search Live conversations are automatically saved within the AI mode’s history for future reference.
The launch of Search Live underscores the growing trend of voice-based AI interaction. OpenAI introduced Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT last year, and Anthropic launched a voice feature for its Claude application in May. Apple is also reportedly developing an LLM Siri, although its release has been delayed due to concerns about reliability.
Google’s Search Live represents a significant advancement in voice search technology, offering a more intuitive and conversational way for users to access information. As AI models continue to evolve, we can expect further innovations in voice-based search and interaction, potentially transforming how we interact with technology in our daily lives.
