Moscow/Seoul, June 17 – In a move signaling deepening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu arrived in North Korea on June 17 and held a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The visit, confirmed by Russian state media TASS and others, comes on the heels of a previous meeting between the two officials in Pyongyang earlier this month.

Shoigu’s visit, conducted under the special instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, aims to implement the agreements reached during the June 4 talks, according to a statement from the Russian Security Council. The Council emphasized that the visit underscores the commitment of both nations to fulfill their obligations under the framework of the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and North Korea. The specific details of Putin’s instructions remain undisclosed.

Video footage released by Russian media showed Kim Jong-un personally greeting Shoigu at the entrance to the meeting venue, highlighting the importance of the visit.

This meeting follows a previous encounter between Kim and Shoigu, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on June 5. During that meeting, the two leaders reportedly exchanged views on a range of issues, including the situation in Ukraine.

The strengthening relationship between Russia and North Korea has drawn international attention, particularly in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions. Analysts are closely watching the evolving dynamics between the two nations and the potential implications for regional security and stability.
