Tokyo – In a move aimed at alleviating the pressure of rising rice prices on consumers, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) is planning to hold a competitive auction for 30,000 tons of imported rice for staple food use in June, sources familiar with the matter told NHK. This action, which is being implemented earlier than usual, reflects the government’s concern over the continuous increase in rice prices.

Under the minimum access commitment, Japan imports approximately 770,000 tons of rice annually with zero tariffs. Of this total, 100,000 tons are designated for staple food use and are sold to private sector buyers through a competitive bidding process.

Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Shinjiro Koizumi told reporters on the afternoon of June 12th that the government intends to advance the timing of the auction for imported rice intended for staple food use to June in order to lower rice prices. The rice secured through the auction will be distributed in the market as staple food rice by the successful bidders.

The first auction is scheduled for June 27th and will involve 30,000 tons of the 100,000 tons of rice earmarked for staple food. The shipment of this rice is expected to arrive in Japan in September.
