Seoul, South Korea – In a move highlighting the deepening relationship between North Korea and Russia, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent a congratulatory message to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the occasion of Russia Day, celebrated annually on June 12th. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the exchange on Wednesday.
Kim’s message underscores the growing camaraderie between the two nations, particularly in light of Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which Moscow refers to as a just war to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The traditional friendly relations between the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] and Russia are now being consolidated more firmly on the strength of the militant friendship between the service personnel of the two countries in the just struggle for defending the sovereignty and security of the two countries, Kim stated in his message, according to KCNA. He further emphasized that the relationship has developed into a true comrades-in-arms relationship and an alliance that can never be broken by anything.
The North Korean leader pledged his unwavering support for Putin and the Russian Federation, stating, I and the government of the DPRK will invariably and comprehensively promote the sustained development of the DPRK-Russia relations which have been forged and verified amid all sorts of challenges and ordeals, and always stand by the side of the president and government of the Russian Federation.
The message was delivered to Russian officials through the North Korean ambassador to Russia, Shin Hong-chol, who conveyed it to the relevant counterpart at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
This expression of solidarity follows President Putin’s recent visit to Pyongyang, during which the two leaders signed a strategic partnership agreement, further solidifying their cooperation across various sectors. The strengthening ties between North Korea and Russia have raised concerns in the international community, particularly regarding potential violations of UN sanctions against North Korea and the implications for regional security.
Conclusion:
Kim Jong-un’s congratulatory message to Putin on Russia Day serves as a clear indication of the deepening strategic alignment between North Korea and Russia. This strengthened relationship, forged amidst international challenges and shared geopolitical interests, warrants close observation as it continues to evolve and potentially reshape the geopolitical landscape in Northeast Asia and beyond. Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term implications of this alliance and its impact on international norms and security.
