Seoul, South Korea – South Korean police have issued a third summons for former President Yoon Suk-yeol to appear for questioning on June 19th as a suspect in connection with the 2017 imposition of martial law. This latest development comes after Yoon repeatedly refused to comply with previous summonses.

According to a report by Yonhap News Agency on June 12th, the Special Investigation Team of the National Investigation Headquarters at the Korean National Police Agency, which is responsible for investigating the December 3rd Emergency Martial Law Incident, stated that a face-to-face investigation of Yoon Suk-yeol is deemed necessary. Consequently, they have issued another summons.

Yoon’s legal representative, Yoon Kap-keun, declined to comment when contacted by Yonhap News Agency.

The former president is under investigation for allegedly instructing the Presidential Security Service to obstruct the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) from executing a detention order against him, which constitutes obstruction of special duty. He is also accused of ordering the security service to delete records related to the martial law commander from encrypted mobile phones, a violation of the Presidential Security Act’s provisions against abuse of power.

Police initially summoned Yoon Suk-yeol to appear for questioning on June 5th, but he refused. A second summons for June 12th was also ignored. The repeated refusals have now led to this third attempt to bring the former president in for questioning.

Conclusion:

The ongoing investigation into Yoon Suk-yeol’s alleged involvement in the 2017 martial law incident continues to be a significant issue in South Korean politics. The repeated summonses and Yoon’s refusal to comply highlight the tension between the investigative authorities and the former president. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for South Korean law and the accountability of high-ranking officials. Further developments are expected as the June 19th deadline approaches.
