Beijing, June 13, 2025 – The Chinese Ministry of National Defense has strongly condemned Japan’s recent accusations regarding the activities of Chinese aircraft carriers in the Pacific Ocean, urging Tokyo to cease what it describes as dangerous and provocative actions. The statement came in response to claims made by the Japanese Ministry of Defense alleging that Chinese carrier-based aircraft had engaged in abnormally close encounters with Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) aircraft during the first-ever simultaneous deployment of two Chinese aircraft carriers in the Pacific.
The remarks were delivered by Senior Colonel Jiang Bin, Deputy Director of the Information Bureau and spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, during a press briefing held this afternoon. The issue was raised directly by a journalist, who inquired about China’s response to Japan’s allegations.
We firmly oppose Japan’s unfounded accusations and demand that they immediately cease all actions that escalate tensions and endanger regional stability, Senior Colonel Jiang stated. He further emphasized that the Chinese naval exercises were conducted in accordance with international law and norms, and within international waters.
The deployment of two Chinese aircraft carriers represents a significant milestone in China’s naval modernization and power projection capabilities. While the Ministry of National Defense has not released specific details about the exercises, analysts suggest that the drills are aimed at enhancing the Chinese navy’s operational readiness and demonstrating its ability to project power further afield.
This incident underscores the increasingly complex security environment in the Asia-Pacific region, where rising military capabilities and territorial disputes have contributed to heightened tensions. While China maintains that its military development is purely for defensive purposes, neighboring countries, including Japan, remain wary of its growing influence.
The incident also highlights the importance of establishing clear communication channels and protocols to prevent miscalculations and unintended escalations. Experts have repeatedly called for increased dialogue and cooperation between China and Japan to manage their differences and build mutual trust.
Moving forward, it is crucial for both China and Japan to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue to address their security concerns. Failure to do so risks further escalating tensions and undermining regional stability. The international community will be closely watching how both nations navigate this sensitive issue in the coming weeks and months.
