Seoul, South Korea – South Korean police have apprehended a suspect who posted online threats suggesting an attack on the family of Lee Jae-myung, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, during his son’s upcoming wedding.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the suspect was arrested on June 11th after posting messages on social media that alluded to an attack targeting Lee Jae-myung and his family under the guise of his son’s wedding.
The Seoul Seongbuk Police Station confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect, identified as Mr. A and in his 50s, is being investigated on charges of threatening the public. During questioning, Mr. A confessed to posting the messages but claimed he had no intention of carrying out the attack.
Even if the suspect had no actual intention of committing the crime, uploading threatening posts itself is a criminal act, a police official stated. We will thoroughly investigate and punish him severely.
Lee Jae-myung’s son, Lee Dong-ho, is scheduled to hold his wedding this weekend. On June 9th, Mr. A posted a message on social media with the hashtag eliminate at once, writing, I can obtain the license plate numbers of vehicles entering and exiting. The post also included a screenshot of a map showing the wedding venue and mentioned the wedding time.
This incident raises concerns about the safety of political figures and their families in South Korea. While the suspect claims to have had no intention of carrying out the threat, the police are taking the matter seriously, emphasizing that online threats are a punishable offense. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the police continue their inquiry.
