Hongseong, South Korea – The Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Council in South Korea is urging the central government to take a firm stance against China’s construction of structures within the Yellow Sea’s Provisional Measures Zone (PMZ), a maritime area subject to ongoing negotiations between the two nations. The council is demanding a strong protest from Seoul and the immediate removal of the Chinese-built facilities.

According to a statement released by the Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Council on June 11th, the resolution, spearheaded by council member Bang Han-il, was passed during a plenary session the previous day. The resolution, titled Motion Urging China to Dismantle Illegal Structures in the Yellow Sea, highlights concerns over China’s recent construction activities in the disputed waters.

Bang Han-il argued that China’s unilateral actions, undertaken without prior consultation, not only infringe upon South Korea’s maritime sovereignty but also pose a potential threat to the livelihoods of local fishermen operating in the area. The council is calling on the government to establish a robust maritime surveillance system, bolster naval and coast guard patrols, and enhance overall maritime control capabilities.

These structures, built without proper consultation, represent a clear challenge to our sovereignty and could have significant economic consequences for our fishing communities, stated a council representative.

The Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Council intends to formally communicate its recommendations to key figures within the South Korean government, including the President, Prime Minister, Speaker of the National Assembly, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Yellow Sea has long been a point of contention between China and South Korea, particularly regarding maritime boundaries and resource management. The establishment of the PMZ was intended as a temporary measure to allow for joint management and exploration of resources while negotiations on a permanent maritime border continue. However, the recent construction activities by China have raised concerns in South Korea about Beijing’s intentions and its commitment to good-faith negotiations.

This move by the Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Council underscores the growing pressure on the South Korean government to adopt a more assertive approach in addressing maritime disputes with China. The situation in the Yellow Sea remains a sensitive issue, and its resolution will require careful diplomacy and a commitment to international law from both sides.
