Seoul, June 6 (Yonhap) – South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has appointed Kim Yong-beom, former First Vice Minister of Economy and Finance (Deputy Minister), as the new Chief of Presidential Policy, according to an announcement made today.

The appointment, revealed by Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik during a press briefing at the Presidential Office, is part of a broader restructuring plan. Kang highlighted Kim’s extensive background, including his tenure as a senior economist at the World Bank and his experience as First Vice Minister of Economy and Finance.

Kim Yong-beom possesses profound insight into economic policy, Kang stated. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was responsible for crisis management. We believe he is the best person to implement President Lee Jae-myung’s campaign promises and overcome the current challenges to people’s livelihoods.

In addition to Kim’s appointment, Ha Joon-kyung, a professor at Hanyang University, has been named as the Senior Secretary for Economic Growth, and Moon Jin-young, a professor at Sogang University, will serve as the Senior Secretary for Social Affairs.

This reshuffling of key personnel signals a renewed focus on economic stability and social welfare under President Lee’s administration. The selection of experienced figures like Kim Yong-beom, with his background in international finance and crisis management, suggests a strategic approach to tackling the economic challenges facing South Korea.
