Seoul, South Korea – June 6, 2024 – In a move signaling a strategic emphasis on economic revitalization and technological advancement, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has reorganized his presidential office, creating new secretariats dedicated to economic growth and artificial intelligence (AI).
The announcement, made today by Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik during a press briefing, underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing pressing economic challenges and positioning South Korea as a global leader in the burgeoning AI landscape.
The most notable changes include the appointment of Kim Yong-beom, former First Vice Minister of Economy and Finance, as the new Chief of Staff for Policy. Kim brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as a senior economist at the World Bank and holding key positions within the Ministry of Economy and Finance. His deep understanding of economic policy and proven crisis management skills, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, are expected to be invaluable in implementing President Lee’s economic agenda and mitigating the current cost of living crisis.
Further highlighting the administration’s economic priorities, the existing Economic Secretary position has been revamped and renamed Economic Growth Secretary. Hanyang University Professor Ha Joon-kyung has been tapped to fill this crucial role.
Perhaps the most forward-looking aspect of the reshuffle is the creation of a dedicated AI Secretariat. This new division will be spearheaded by a yet-to-be-named Chief Secretary and will focus on achieving President Lee’s ambitious goal of propelling South Korea into the top three global AI powerhouses. This move recognizes the transformative potential of AI across various sectors and the need for focused government support to foster innovation and competitiveness in this critical field.
In addition to these key appointments, the presidential office has also established a new Assistant Secretary for Fiscal Planning, a position at the chief secretary level, which will be filled by Chung-Ang University Professor Ryu Deok-hyun. The Secretary for Social Affairs will be led by a professor from Sogang University.
This strategic restructuring of the presidential office reflects President Lee’s commitment to proactive governance and his vision for South Korea’s future.
