Seoul, June 2nd – South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) today refuted North Korea’s assertion that its military cooperation with Russia is a legitimate exercise of sovereignty. The Ministry stated that any arms trade with North Korea or transfer of weapons to the country is a blatant violation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

The MOFA released a statement emphasizing that North Korea’s claims are utterly absurd, disregarding the authority of the UNSC in maintaining international peace and security and ignoring its resolutions, which hold the force of international law.

The statement further defended the activities of the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT), a cooperative mechanism voluntarily participated in by UN member states. The MOFA asserted that the MSMT’s monitoring and enforcement of sanctions against North Korea are legitimate and justified.

As a cooperative mechanism voluntarily participated in by UN member states, the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT)’s activities to implement and monitor sanctions against North Korea are legitimate and justified, the MOFA stated.

Koo Byung-sam, spokesperson for the Ministry of Unification, echoed this sentiment during a press briefing, condemning North Korea’s claims as a distortion of reality.

These strong rebukes come in response to a statement released by the Director-General of the Department of External Policy of the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 1st, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The North Korean official vehemently criticized a recent report by the MSMT, comprised of 11 nations including South Korea, the United States, and Japan, regarding North Korea-Russia cooperation. The official condemned the report as a severe infringement on national sovereignty and warned of potential repercussions.

Conclusion:

This latest exchange highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding North Korea’s international relations and its defiance of UN sanctions. South Korea’s firm stance underscores its commitment to upholding international law and maintaining pressure on North Korea to denuclearize. The situation warrants continued monitoring as the potential for further escalation remains a concern.
