Seoul, South Korea – South Korean violinist Sueye Park has been awarded the first prize at the esteemed Sibelius Violin Competition, according to a report by Yonhap News Agency. The competition, recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious for violinists, concluded its latest edition in Finland.

The Kumho Cultural Foundation, along with the competition organizers, announced on May 30th that the 13th Sibelius Violin Competition, held from May 27th to 29th, saw Park emerge victorious after her performance in the finals. Park captivated the jury and audience with her rendition of Oliver Knussen’s Violin Concerto and Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor.

This marks the second consecutive time a South Korean violinist has claimed the top honor at the Sibelius Competition. In 2022, Yinam Leem became the first Korean to win the competition, and before him, Kristel Lee, a Korean-American violinist, won the competition in 2015. Park’s victory solidifies South Korea’s growing prominence in the world of classical music and violin performance.

The Sibelius Competition is held in honor of the renowned Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.
