Longquan, Zhejiang Province – In a move poised to revolutionize logistics in its mountainous region, Longquan City, located in Zhejiang Province, is set to construct 11 new drone vertiports. This ambitious infrastructure project, detailed in a recent report by the Zhejiang Daily and highlighted by IT Home, aims to enhance the city’s existing passenger-cargo-mail + drone low-altitude infrastructure, streamlining delivery services to remote villages.
The project, currently in the public bidding phase, will strategically place the vertiports along three established aerial postal routes. These vertiports will serve as crucial hubs for battery swapping and cargo sorting, enabling a more efficient and comprehensive aerial postal route network across the region.
Longquan has already pioneered three drone routes: Baoxi Township (Peak Scenic Tourism), Daotai Township (Fresh Spring Fishing), and Pingnan (Green Mountain Delicacies). These routes are currently in the trial operation phase. A prime example is the route connecting Xitou Village in Baoxi Township to Qingjing Natural Village. What would typically be a one-hour, 30-kilometer car journey through winding mountain roads can now be accomplished by drone in a mere 10 minutes. These drones, capable of carrying payloads up to 25 kilograms, are equipped with intelligent autonomous navigation and real-time monitoring, making them ideal for transporting time-sensitive goods like emergency medicine and fresh produce.

The construction of these vertiports addresses a significant logistical challenge in Longquan. Longquan is located in a mountainous area in southwestern Zhejiang, with a vast territory and scattered villages, explained a project spokesperson. For a long time, the logistics bottleneck of consumer goods entering the villages and agricultural products leaving the mountains has restricted the development of the mountainous areas.
While Longquan has already established a three-tiered express logistics network consisting of 15 passenger-cargo-mail integrated routes and 57 service points, the last-mile delivery to remote areas remains slow and inefficient. The passenger-cargo-mail + drone low-altitude infrastructure project is designed to overcome this hurdle. The planned vertiports will extend the reach of the aerial delivery network to previously inaccessible mountain villages, bringing the benefits of efficient air logistics to residents and businesses alike. This initiative promises to make the phrase high mountains and long roads are no longer a problem a reality for the people of Longquan.
Conclusion:
Longquan City’s investment in drone infrastructure represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing logistical challenges in rural areas. By establishing a network of vertiports and leveraging drone technology, the city is poised to unlock economic opportunities, improve access to essential goods, and enhance the quality of life for its residents. This project serves as a potential model for other mountainous regions facing similar logistical hurdles, demonstrating the transformative power of drone technology in bridging the gap between urban centers and remote communities. Future research could focus on the economic impact of the drone delivery network, the environmental considerations of increased drone traffic, and the scalability of this model to other regions.
