Seoul, South Korea – South Korea’s 21st presidential election has recorded a significant absentee voting rate, marking the second-highest in the nation’s history. According to the National Election Commission (NEC), the two-day absentee voting period concluded with a turnout of 34.74%.
The election, closely watched both domestically and internationally, saw a substantial number of citizens casting their votes early. Out of the total 44,391,871 eligible voters, 15,423,607 participated in the absentee voting process.
The absentee voting period, which began on May 29th at 6:00 AM, allowed citizens to cast their ballots at 3,568 polling stations across the country. The polls were open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM each day.
While the 34.74% absentee voting rate is notably high, it falls slightly short of the record set during the 20th presidential election in 2022, which saw an absentee voting rate of 36.93%.
The high level of participation in absentee voting reflects a growing trend in South Korean elections, where voters are increasingly taking advantage of early voting options to exercise their democratic rights. This trend can be attributed to various factors, including increased awareness of absentee voting procedures, greater convenience, and a desire to avoid potential crowds on election day.
The NEC has assured the public that all necessary measures are in place to ensure the integrity and security of the voting process. As the election approaches, all eyes are on South Korea as it prepares to choose its next leader. The results of this election will undoubtedly have significant implications for the country’s future, both domestically and on the global stage.
