Beijing, May 17, 2024 – In a testament to the enduring bond between alumnus and alma mater, the JD Qunxue Building, a teaching facility donated by Liu Qiangdong, founder and chairman of JD.com, was officially inaugurated today at the Tongzhou campus of Renmin University of China (RUC).
The building, named Qunxue – an older translation of sociology that also signifies the convergence and integration of academic schools of thought – stands as a physical embodiment of Liu’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and supporting the development of his alma mater. The JD Qunxue Building boasts a total construction area of approximately 31,000 square meters.
This act of philanthropy builds upon Liu’s previous significant contribution to RUC. In 2017, during the university’s 80th-anniversary celebration, Liu donated 300 million yuan and established the RUC JD Fund, setting a new record for social donations to the university.
According to official announcements, the RUC JD Fund is primarily dedicated to supporting the construction of RUC’s new Tongzhou campus, the development of the sociology discipline, and related academic fields such as law, journalism, internet technology, artificial intelligence, finance, and economics. The fund will also significantly increase scholarships, grants, and teaching awards to incentivize and cultivate outstanding teachers and students, and to support the growth of exceptional talent and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Beyond the building itself, the partnership between JD.com and RUC extends to practical applications of technology within the campus environment. On the same day as the building’s inauguration, a smart express service center, jointly built by JD Logistics and RUC, was officially launched at the Tongzhou campus. This marks the first university-enterprise co-constructed smart express service center in Beijing, featuring the deployment of sixth-generation intelligent delivery vehicles and JD Service+ offerings.
Liu Qiangdong’s continued support for Renmin University of China underscores the crucial role that corporate philanthropy plays in advancing education and research. The JD Qunxue Building and the RUC JD Fund will undoubtedly contribute significantly to the university’s mission of cultivating future leaders and fostering innovation in various fields.
