Menlo Park, CA – In a bold move to compete with the likes of ChatGPT and other AI assistants, Meta has officially launched its standalone AI assistant application, Meta AI. The app, unveiled today, integrates typical AI assistant functionalities with a unique social twist, aiming to demystify AI and showcase its potential to a wider audience.

The Meta AI app offers users the ability to interact through text prompts or voice conversations, generate images, and access real-time web search results – features now considered standard in the AI assistant landscape. However, the app’s most innovative feature is its Discover feed.

A Socially Driven AI Experience

The Discover feed allows users to view interactions with Meta AI that have been shared by other users, including friends on Instagram and Facebook. These shared interactions are presented based on specific prompts, allowing users to see the creative and practical applications of the AI. Users can engage with these shared AI posts by liking, commenting, sharing, and even remixing them into their own content.

In a brief demonstration, the full-duplex mode conveyed a significantly higher level of personality compared to the standard voice mode. Both the standard and full-duplex voice modes are currently available in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Personalization and Integration with User Data

In the US and Canada, Meta AI leverages user profile information from Facebook and Instagram to personalize its responses. Similar to ChatGPT, users can also instruct Meta AI to remember specific details about themselves, further tailoring the AI’s interactions. The application is powered by the Meta-optimized Llama 4 model, ensuring robust performance and accurate results.

Reaching a Billion Users Through Existing Platforms

Currently, most users experience Meta AI through integrated features within Meta’s existing platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Meta anticipates that the primary use cases for its AI assistant will continue to be within these familiar environments, such as the Instagram search bar.

Hayes stated that Meta AI has already approached a billion users through this integrated approach, but acknowledged that a standalone application provides the most intuitive way to interact with an AI assistant.

Replacing the Meta Ray-Ban Companion App

Notably, Meta AI technically replaces the existing companion app (View app) for the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. The new interface features a dedicated tab allowing users to access previous functionalities.
