Changwon, South Korea – Representatives from Changwon, South Korea, and Fushun, China, met on April 24th to discuss avenues for renewed cooperation in economic, cultural, and other sectors, according to a statement released by the Changwon City government. The meeting signals a potential revitalization of ties that were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A five-member delegation from Fushun, led by Fushun Mayor Wang Qinghai, visited key sites in Changwon, including the Changwon City Hall, Doosan Enerbility, the Seongsan Art Hall, and the traditional Korean house Changwon House. The itinerary included tours of industrial facilities and opportunities to experience local culture.

We hope that exchanges between the two cities will expand further in the future, Mayor Wang Qinghai stated.

Jang Geum-ryong, the acting Mayor of Changwon, expressed a similar sentiment, stating, I hope that this visit by the Fushun delegation will be a new starting point for the resumption of exchanges between the two cities. We are willing to work together with Fushun to develop together.

Changwon and Fushun established a sister city relationship in September 1997. In 2016, the two cities jointly hosted the Changwon City and Chinese Local Government Economic and Tourism Cooperation Conference. However, exchanges between the two cities were interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors. This recent meeting marks a significant step towards rebuilding those connections.

Conclusion:

The meeting between Changwon and Fushun representatives offers a promising outlook for the revitalization of a long-standing sister city relationship. By focusing on economic and cultural exchange, both cities aim to foster mutual growth and understanding. The renewed commitment to cooperation signals a positive trend in regional partnerships, particularly as the world recovers from the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further developments in this partnership will be closely watched as a potential model for similar collaborations between South Korean and Chinese cities.
