Seoul, South Korea – In a move to bolster its supply chain security and reduce reliance on foreign sources, the South Korean government announced on April 18th that it will provide subsidies to domestic companies producing critical materials for secondary batteries and semiconductors. The initiative, effective this year, will focus on materials like graphite and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, offering support for a limited period of two years.

The decision, unveiled as part of a supplementary budget proposal, aims to address vulnerabilities associated with materials that are difficult to stockpile or have limited import channels, posing a high risk to economic security. To this end, the government has allocated an initial budget of 14.6 billion won (approximately 74.93 million RMB) for the newly established subsidy program.

Under the scheme, the government will subsidize up to 70% of the difference between the domestic production cost and the import cost for eligible materials. Graphite and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride are among the key materials targeted by the program.

This strategic move comes as global competition intensifies in the battery and semiconductor industries. Securing a stable supply of essential materials is crucial for South Korea to maintain its competitive edge in these sectors. By incentivizing domestic production, the government seeks to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical uncertainties and potential disruptions to international supply chains.

The subsidy program is expected to encourage investment in domestic production facilities and foster technological innovation in the targeted material sectors. This, in turn, could create new jobs and contribute to the overall growth of the South Korean economy.

While the two-year timeframe suggests a short-term focus, the program could be extended or modified based on its initial success and the evolving global landscape. The South Korean government’s commitment to strengthening its supply chain resilience signals a proactive approach to ensuring long-term economic stability and competitiveness in key strategic industries.
