Seoul, April 17 – The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has rejected a request from North Korea to investigate alleged drone incursions by South Korea, during which Pyongyang claimed anti-North Korean leaflets were disseminated over its capital.
According to a South Korean Foreign Ministry official, ICAO convened a meeting on April 1st to review North Korea’s claims. The organization ultimately decided against taking any action, with members unanimously agreeing that no further investigation was warranted.
North Korea initially made the accusations in October of last year, alleging that South Korean drones had violated its airspace over Pyongyang and dropped propaganda leaflets. Earlier this year, Pyongyang formally requested that ICAO launch an investigation into the South Korean government’s actions.
In accordance with ICAO’s charter and established practices, the organization’s council is obligated to review issues raised by member states. Representatives from 36 member countries, including South Korea and China, convened a closed-door meeting to discuss the matter, ultimately resulting in the unanimous rejection of North Korea’s request.
