Zhengzhou, China – In a significant leap for Chinese engineering and manufacturing, the CR1459, China’s largest diameter shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) for export, rolled off the production line today in Zhengzhou, Henan province. The colossal machine, manufactured by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CREG), is destined for the Western Harbour Tunnel project in Sydney, Australia.
Lin Junke, Party Secretary and Chairman of CREG, announced the milestone at a ceremony held at the company’s National TBM Industrialization Center. The CR1459 boasts a staggering 15.7-meter excavation diameter and a total length of approximately 113 meters, making it the largest of its kind to be exported from China.
The Western Harbour Tunnel project in Sydney is a critical infrastructure undertaking, designed as a twin-tube, two-way highway tunnel stretching 1.5 kilometers. The tunnel presents significant engineering challenges, reaching a maximum depth of 52 meters below sea level and featuring a minimum turning radius of 960 meters, resulting in an S shaped alignment. Moreover, the TBM will navigate through a complex and varied geological profile, including sandstone, silt, and silty clay layers, with uniaxial compressive strength reaching up to 30 MPa and, in some areas, exceeding 80 MPa.
To overcome these challenges, the CR1459 is equipped with a suite of cutting-edge technologies, including:
- Automated Cutter Replacement System: Featuring a robotic arm, this system allows for unmanned, millimeter-precision cutter changes, increasing efficiency by 5-8 times compared to traditional manual methods.
- Robotic Systems: The machine is equipped with robotic systems for cutterhead flushing, sleeper handling, automatic segment transport, and semi-automatic segment assembly.
- Real-time Monitoring: The TBM is equipped with online monitoring systems for cutter wear and grout injection rates, enabling precise control over tunneling and subsidence in complex geological conditions.
The successful development and export of the CR1459 underscores China’s growing prowess in advanced manufacturing and its ability to compete on the global stage in the infrastructure development sector. The project not only demonstrates China’s technological capabilities but also highlights the increasing demand for Chinese-made heavy machinery in international markets. As China continues to invest in research and development, it is poised to further solidify its position as a leader in the global engineering and construction industry.
