Seoul, South Korea – Amidst celebrations marking the Day of the Sun, the anniversary of the birth of North Korea’s founding leader Kim Il-sung, the conspicuous absence of current leader Kim Jong-un from the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun has raised eyebrows and sparked speculation about a potential shift in his leadership approach.

According to a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on April 16th, senior officials including Park Tae-sung and Choe Ryong-hae, members of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Workers’ Party of Korea, paid their respects at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun on April 15th. The palace houses the embalmed bodies of Kim Il-sung and his son, Kim Jong-il. Notably absent from the report was any mention of Kim Jong-un’s presence.

Since assuming power in 2012, Kim Jong-un has typically marked Kim Il-sung’s birthday with a visit to the Kumsusan Palace, accompanied by high-ranking officials. The first break in this pattern occurred in 2020, attributed to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While he resumed the practice in 2021 and 2022, accompanied by his wife Ri Sol-ju, this marks the third consecutive year he has not been reported to have visited the mausoleum on this significant date.

This absence is particularly noteworthy considering the historical significance of the Kumsusan Palace. Traditionally, Kim Jong-un has visited the palace on major anniversaries, including the birthdays and death anniversaries of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, as well as the anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

Analysts suggest that the decreasing frequency of these visits may signal an effort by Kim Jong-un to consolidate his own authority and move away from the rigid traditions established by his predecessors. By distancing himself from the constant veneration of his grandfather and father, Kim Jong-un could be attempting to forge his own distinct identity as leader and potentially pave the way for new policy directions.

While the exact reasons for Kim Jong-un’s absence remain unclear, the development is being closely watched by international observers for clues about the future trajectory of North Korea’s leadership and its approach to domestic and foreign policy. The implications of this potential shift in leadership style could be far-reaching, impacting everything from North Korea’s internal political dynamics to its relations with the international community.
