Shenzhen, China – April 11, 2025 – WeChat, the ubiquitous social messaging and mobile payment app, has released a new beta update (version 1.0.5.40) for its HarmonyOS version. The update, currently available through an invitation-only beta program, introduces several new features, including the ability to search for members within group chats and a mass messaging tool.
The news, first reported by IT Home, highlights the continued development and refinement of WeChat’s HarmonyOS application. The update requires users to receive a specific SMS invitation before they can download and install the new version.
According to the release notes, this version mirrors the changes introduced in version 1.0.5.39, which included:
- Support for sharing videos and live streams from WeChat Channels to Moments (WeChat’s social feed).
- Support for sharing official account articles to Moments.
- Support for searching group members.
- Introduction of a mass messaging assistant.
- Various bug fixes.
WeChat’s HarmonyOS app officially launched in January of this year on the Huawei App Gallery. The application already supports core functionalities such as basic communication, social networking, WeChat Pay, official accounts, mini-programs, WeChat Channels, live streaming, dual login on phones and tablets, and dark mode. The latest beta versions are gradually rolling out facial recognition and fingerprint payment features.
The development of native HarmonyOS applications has been a key focus for Huawei. At the Huawei Developer Conference 2024, the company announced a full-scale push for HarmonyOS applications, aiming to have the top 5000 apps fully adapted to the operating system. Huawei stated that these apps would cover 99.9% of user usage time across 18 different sectors.
Several major Chinese apps, including WeChat, QQ, Alipay, Taobao, and JD.com, have already developed HarmonyOS versions. IT Home and its sister product, Zui Hui Mai, also released their official HarmonyOS 1.0 versions on September 30th of last year.
Conclusion:
The ongoing development of WeChat’s HarmonyOS version underscores the growing importance of Huawei’s operating system within the Chinese mobile ecosystem. The addition of features like group member search and mass messaging tools demonstrates a commitment to providing a comprehensive user experience on the HarmonyOS platform. As Huawei continues to expand the HarmonyOS ecosystem, the availability of key applications like WeChat will be crucial for its continued success. Future developments will likely focus on further optimizing performance and expanding feature parity with the iOS and Android versions of the app.
